Pickleball
Los Barriles has embraced pickleball with open arms. Between the vibrant courts at Tres Palapas and the
welcoming setup at Hotel Palmas de Cortez, plus additional courts at the central town park, this seaside town
now boasts more than 50 courts open to the public. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned player, you’l
find yourself immersed in a community that’s always ready to welcome a new game.
The beauty of pickleball lies in its simplicity. You don’t need expensive gear, a large group, or years of
training—just a paddle, a partner, and a little enthusiasm. The game adapts to any skill level, making it
perfect for families, fitness seekers, social butterflies, and fierce competitors alike.

Windsports/Kiting
Along the vibrant coastline of the Sea of Cortez, the heartbeat of Los Barriles is found on the water. Fromdawn to dusk, the ocean is alive with activity, adventure, and the thrill of movement. This small coastal town has quietly built a global reputation as one of the top wind and water sports hubs in the world.
Windsurfers first discovered the magic of Los Barriles decades ago, drawn by the dependable El Norte winds that sweep through from November to March. Today, that same wind fuels a full-blown love affair with kiteboarding. With steady gusts and wide-open beaches, the town has become a pilgrimage site for kiteboarders—so much so that Kite World Magazine dubbed it a must-visit destination.
Early risers are rewarded with more than a stunning sunrise—the golden horizon often reveals a flurry of morning rituals. Fishing boats glide out to sea, while paddleboarders trace peaceful paths across the glassy surface. On calmer mornings, snorkelers explore nearshore reefs, swimmers take leisurely laps, and electric hydrofoilers (E-foilers) silently soar above the waves—riding the future of ocean sports on motorized, flying boards.
As midday approaches, the ocean transforms. The breeze stiffens, waves begin to chop, and the shoreline erupts with energy. Kites climb into the sky, sails catch the wind, and riders race across the turquoise expanse, carving turns, jumping waves, and lifting skyward with gravity-defying ease. The afternoon becomes a show, and the horizon a stage of color and motion.
For beginners or those looking to sharpen their skills, several local kite schools offer instruction and gear rentals. And for those who prefer to stay dry, beachfront bars and shaded lounges provide the perfect spot to soak in the scene—cocktail in hand, toes in the sand, and a front-row seat to one of the world’s most dynamic displays of wind and water play.

Off-Roading
If your perfect day involves a little dust, a lot of throttle, and endless trails, then Los Barriles is your kind of playground. The East Cape delivers an off-road experience that’s as wild or as mellow as you want it to be—whether you’re in a 4×4, ATV, side-by-side, dirt bike, or dual-sport.
With hundreds of miles of rugged terrain, sandy beach tracks, and winding mountain paths, there’s no shortage of space to roam. Feeling bold? Tackle the legendary coastal route north toward Bahia de los Sueños (Bay of Dreams)—a full-throttle journey through raw Baja wilderness. Prefer something spontaneous? Cruise up a nearby arroyo and discover hidden waterfalls, or idle along the shoreline and roll into a beachfront taco shack. Here, adventure doesn’t follow a schedule—you make it up as you go.
Need wheels? No problem. Local rental shops have a full fleet of off-road machines ready to go, from nimble quads to fully outfitted side-by-sides. They’ll hook you up with helmets, safety gear, GPS maps, and even local advice on the best routes. For those who want a little guidance (or just want to ride without worrying about directions), guided tours are a great way to experience the terrain. Some even offer overnight expeditions—crossing the Sierra de la Laguna mountains and descending into the artistic town of Todos Santos for a night under the stars.
We recommend reaching out to our Property Manager Eric Rosa’s Cota (WhatApp number 52 624 192 7973 or just ask us through this website) if you’d like some ATV’s/side-by-sides as he has his own affordable Off-Roading company. There are plenty of other options as well.
Whether you’re chasing adrenaline or just exploring at your own pace, off-roading in Los Barriles offers freedom, fun, and unforgettable landscapes. So gear up, hit the gas, and let the East Cape take you for a ride.

Hiking
For those who prefer their adventures on foot, the East Cape delivers endless opportunities to wander, climb, and connect with nature. The hills surrounding Los Barriles, Buena Vista, and the northern ridgelines are crisscrossed with scenic trails that are easy to access and well-tended, thanks to a dedicated local crew of volunteers. Most routes are mapped on popular hiking apps, and many are marked on the ground—making it easy to hit the trail with confidence. Expect sweeping views of the Sea of Cortez at every turn, and a deep sense of peace that only this landscape can offer.
Looking for something more challenging? Head south to the village of Santiago, then turn inland toward Rancho San Dionisio. This rustic outpost serves as a gateway to the Sierra de la Laguna mountains—where dramatic elevation changes, riverbeds, and remote wilderness await. From here, ambitious hikers can tackle the high-country trails that ascend from the desert floor to alpine ridges nearly 7,000 feet above sea level.
For the boldest explorers, multi-day hikes through the Sierra are unforgettable. Camp under a canopy of stars, follow trails through changing ecosystems—from palm-lined canyons to pine forests—and descend into the Pacific side of the peninsula, finishing near the vibrant artsy town of Todos Santos. Along the way, you’ll witness the rare magic of Baja’s ecological diversity and some of its most jaw-dropping views.

Biking
The East Cape is a paradise for cyclists, offering ideal weather, breathtaking scenery, and a variety of terrains to explore on two wheels. Whether you’re into rugged trails or scenic road rides, this region has something for every rider.
Mountain Bike:
You’ll find a true gem in the hills just west of Los Barriles, where a vast network of expertly maintained trails awaits. These singletracks twist through desert landscapes and offer routes for all skill levels. Best of all, many trailheads begin right in town, just a short pedal up the arroyos—no car required. And it’s not just a local secret: Baja boasts hundreds of miles of premier mountain biking trails that attract riders from around the world. Best way to access trail information would be to use the website trailforks or similar mountain bike websites or talk to the local mountain bike shop. Trailheads start less than a mile (1 km) from the house.
Road Bike:
Road cycling here is equally rewarding. Take a ride along Highway One North for coastal views of the Sea of Cortez, wide open desert vistas, and climbs into the green, wildlife-rich Sierra de la Laguna mountains. If you’re looking for a quieter route, head up the “Road to Nowhere,” a scenic stretch leading to the sleepy village of El Cardonal. With little traffic and big views, it’s a peaceful ride—just be mindful of the occasional pothole. Once there, grab a coffee or lunch before making your way back.
Beach Bikes:
For something a little more relaxed—but no less memorable—try a fat-tire beach ride. The soft sands of Baja Sur’s coastline are perfect for cruising, especially with a cold drink or fresh fish tacos waiting at one of the many beachfront eateries. Sunset rides are particularly magical, and if you’re on a fat-tire e-bike, it’s all fun with minimal effort. If you didn’t bring a bike, don’t worry—Los Barriles has you covered. A local bike shop offers rentals, gear, trail maps, and expert advice on the best routes: Los Barriles Bike Shop

Fishing
Tucked along the Sea of Cortez, the East Cape has earned a reputation as one of the world’s premier sportfishing destinations. This region teems with marine life, boasting unmatched species diversity and ocean biomass.
One of the biggest advantages to fishing here is how quickly you can get into deep water. You might start your morning casting for roosterfish just off the beach, and by midday, be chasing big game—Dorado, Marlin, Tuna, or Skipjack—only minutes from shore. The transition from inshore to offshore is seamless and fast, giving anglers the best of both worlds in a single outing.
Fish availability shifts with the seasons, though patterns can vary year to year. Summer is typically prime time for Dorado, Sailfish, Blue Marlin, Tuna, Skipjack, and Wahoo. In winter, as the water cools, you’ll find Striped Marlin, Pompano, Pargo, Sierra, White Bonito, and several species of jack patrolling the East Cape’s waters.
Los Barriles serves as the local hub for fishing charters, with most boats launching directly from the beach near Hotel Palmas de Cortez. Half-day and full-day trips are available, making it easy to tailor your adventure. And if you bring in a great catch? Plenty of local restaurants will gladly cook it up for you—grilled, fried, or however you like it.
Feeling competitive? The East Cape hosts several top-tier fishing tournaments each year. Two favorites are the Dorado Shootout in July and the Bisbee’s East Cape Offshore, usually held in early August. Both events attract serious anglers—and some serious prize money.
Let us know your fishing goals, and we’ll help connect you with the right crew and the perfect day on the water.
